Internet in China for Tourists: Wi-Fi, eSIM, VPN
How to get online in China as a tourist: eSIM data, hotel Wi-Fi, a laptop and a VPN compared in one table, with the evidence and dates behind each row.
Short answer (14 October 2026): use a travel eSIM that routes data outside China, and keep hotel Wi-Fi for the sites that already work there. Hotel Wi-Fi and local SIMs run on Chinese networks, where Google, WhatsApp and Instagram did not load in OONI tests (8 September to 8 October 2026). A VPN is the backup for laptops and Wi-Fi.

Simbye says its China eSIM routes data through Singapore (plan page and email, 7 Oct 2026), so Google and WhatsApp work without a VPN. No registration, per Simbye.

Wi-Fi vs eSIM data vs VPN
| Option | Google, WhatsApp, Instagram | Cost and effort | Evidence, date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM that routes outside China | Works, per vendors (Simbye, Airalo, Holafly) | From $2.99 (Simbye, 7 Oct). Install at home | Vendor statements, 7 to 14 Oct 2026. No OONI test covers eSIM data paths |
| Hotel or café Wi-Fi | Assume blocked | Free | OONI: google.com 0 of 42 loaded; Airalo says its claim excludes hotel Wi-Fi |
| Local Chinese SIM | Blocked (Chinese network) | 10 GB at 20 CNY a month, $80 upfront, real-name registration and a passport (Wise) | Wise, 6 Oct 2026; OONI |
| Laptop through phone hotspot | Same as the phone’s eSIM data, if the plan allows a hotspot | Uses your data allowance | Check the plan page; we did not record a hotspot rule for Simbye |
| Laptop on hotel Wi-Fi | Blocked without a VPN | VPN subscription | VPN for China |
Which one for which trip
- Phone only, short trip: an eSIM is enough. Buy and install it before you fly.
- Phone and laptop: an eSIM with a hotspot, or a VPN installed before you leave for the laptop. Amnezia is the VPN we link to, but its app is not yet confirmed in China; read the VPN guide first.
- Long stay: a local SIM gives you a number and Chinese apps, but the blocks stay. Pair it with an eSIM or VPN.
What loads from China
These are OONI results for 8 September to 8 October 2026, from our data page: Google Search 0 of 42, Gmail 0 of 31, YouTube 0 of 6, Instagram 0 of 5, WhatsApp 0 of 5. Zoom loaded in 37 of 37 tests and Bing in 39 of 39. A test shows whether a website loaded, not whether an app works.
Per-app pages: WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Zoom.
Before you fly
- Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home and keep the phone in aeroplane mode until you land.
- Keep your home SIM for SMS codes. Data-only eSIMs cannot receive them.
- Install the apps you need and sign in.
- Compare options in best eSIM for China.
