UK Phone in China: Roaming vs eSIM (2026)

By · Updated

Using a UK phone in China: roaming on your UK plan or a travel eSIM? What to check, store access from China (OONI), and what the evidence covers.

Short answer (6 October 2026): a UK phone can usually roam in China if your plan covers it, but operator prices vary and are not covered here, so read your operator’s China terms. A travel eSIM installed before you fly is the usual alternative. Simbye’s China eSIM routes data through Singapore.

What to check

  1. Your operator’s China page: is China included, the price per day or GB, any fair-use limit.
  2. Ask your operator if China is covered and whether your phone is network-unlocked before buying an eSIM.
  3. Set a data limit and turn off background updates before you land.
  4. Keep your home SIM for SMS codes, with data roaming off if you use an eSIM.
