The Shanghai government says no Chinese bank account is needed. We did not read an Alipay help page today; follow the steps in the app.

Why you need data, not just Wi-Fi

  • QR payments need internet at the till, in taxis and at street stalls.
  • Bank SMS codes go to your home number, so keep your home SIM on (data roaming off).
  • An eSIM with data gives you both: Simbye China eSIM, 15% off with NOMADCHINA15 (affiliate link).

Tip: carry some cash and a card as backup. Cards work at POS terminals that show the logo (Shanghai government).

FAQ

Can foreigners use Alipay and WeChat Pay in China?

Yes. Both let you link a foreign Visa or Mastercard without a Chinese bank account (Shanghai government, 2026).

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

No for WeChat Pay: any number that gets SMS codes works (WeChat Help Center). Keep your home SIM active for those codes.

What are the fees for foreign cards?

Payments of 200 yuan or less are generally free. Above 200 yuan, a 3% fee on the full amount may apply. Check the payment screen before you confirm.

What are the limits?

Up to $5,000 per payment and $50,000 a year on Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card (Shanghai government). WeChat's help page lists its own lower RMB limits in the app.

Why do I need mobile data to pay?

Both apps need internet to show or scan the QR code and confirm the payment. Shops rarely offer Wi-Fi at the till, so have an eSIM with data.
