Assume not. Airalo's help page says its no-VPN claim applies to eSIM data and not hotel Wi-Fi (read 14 October 2026). Turn Wi-Fi off and use eSIM data, or use a VPN as a backup.

The hotel Wi-Fi case

Hotel and café Wi-Fi uses a Chinese network. Roaming data on an eSIM that routes outside China takes another path, according to the vendors. So the same phone can behave differently on the two.

Install WhatsApp and verify your number before you fly.
Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi.
In China, switch Wi-Fi off and use the eSIM data. Airalo says its eSIMs are for mobile data and not for hotel Wi-Fi.
If you must use Wi-Fi (laptop, tablet), you need a VPN. Check VPN for China: the data there covers website access, not app connections.

Which eSIM

Simbye says it routes through Singapore and confirmed this by email on 7 October 2026. Holafly says WhatsApp, Google and Instagram work without a separate VPN.
