When unlimited makes sense

• You use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop every day.
• You upload a lot of video.
• You stay 30 days and work online without hotel Wi-Fi.

For maps, messages, Alipay and photos, 1 GB a day is plenty. Turn off auto-updates and cloud photo backup on mobile data.

Before you buy any China eSIM

1. Buy and install at home. Some eSIM stores do not load from China (OONI tests, see best eSIM for China).
2. Check where data exits. If it exits in mainland China, you need a VPN for Google and WhatsApp.
3. Keep your home SIM for SMS codes, with data roaming off.
