German Phone in China: Roaming vs eSIM (2026)

Using a German phone in China: EU roaming does not cover China. Roaming or a travel eSIM? What to check, plus store access from China (OONI).

Short answer (6 October 2026): a German phone can usually roam in China if your plan covers it, but operator prices vary and are not covered here, so read your operator’s China terms. A travel eSIM installed before you fly is the usual alternative. Simbye’s China eSIM routes data through Singapore.

What to check

  1. Your operator’s China page: is China included, the price per day or GB, any fair-use limit.
  2. EU roaming rules cover EU countries, not China, so ask your provider for the China rate. Check the phone has no SIM lock before an eSIM.
  3. Set a data limit and turn off background updates before you land.
  4. Keep your home SIM for SMS codes, with data roaming off if you use an eSIM.
